On the night of January 16, 2024, a powerful explosion rocked the populous city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state in southwestern Nigeria.
The explosion occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m., resulting in the death of five individuals and injuries to at least 77 others.
The cause of the blast was traced back to explosives, improperly stored and utilized for illegal mining operations.
Eye-witness reports painted a picture of disorder as buildings crumbled under the force of the explosion, and terrified residents sought safety in the streets.
The magnitude of the explosion was such that it was palpable in different sections of the city, causing extensive damage. Several houses had their roofs dislodged and windows broken.
Confirming the incident, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, stated that the explosion originated from explosive materials stored by illicit miners in a residential building.
