A tragic incident unfolded in Clifton, New Jersey when Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik took his own life in the restroom of Toros, a bustling Turkish eatery.
The incident took place at around 3:30 p.m., shortly after the sheriff was seen cheerfully posing for a photograph with some familiar faces.
Sheriff Berdnik, in his mid-60s, had a distinguished law enforcement career, holding the position of Passaic County Sheriff since 2011, having been re-elected to his fifth three-year term in November 2022.
His tenure was characterized by his commitment and notable achievements, especially his direction during recent local floodings, as mentioned by Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh.
Prior to his tenure as sheriff, Berdnik had a respected career with the Clifton Police Department, where he headed both the juvenile division and the SWAT team.
Berdnik’s sudden death came against a backdrop of internal issues within the Sheriff’s Department, including the impending layoffs of 29 correctional officers following the closing of the county jail and recent arrests of officers on charges of infringing on a detainee’s civil rights.
Berdnik, a Clifton High School alumnus, was an active member of his community, participating at St. Andrew’s Church as a parishioner and eucharistic minister, and being a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He left behind his wife, Monica, and their four adult children. His passing elicited a flood of condolences from colleagues, officials, and community members, reflecting his influence both as a public servant and a family man.
Governor Phil Murphy expressed his sorrow over the loss, highlighting Berdnik’s leadership skills and their personal bond.
Upon his passing in January, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik held approximately $310,000 in his political fund.
The person in charge of handling the finances for the Friends of Berdnik for Sheriff campaign is now faced with the decision of the fund’s allocation.
Following the settlement of outstanding debts, it’s probable that the remaining funds will be dispersed among political candidates, party organizations, or non-profit groups as donations, following guidelines set by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.
The investigation into the factors leading to Sheriff Berdnik’s tragic end is still ongoing.
