A devastating plane crash in Parker County, Texas, resulted in the loss of three lives on Sunday afternoon, January 14, 2024.
Dr. Heath Smith, a well-respected bariatric surgeon and vice president of the Paradise Independent School District Board, along with his two young children, aged six and eight, were identified as the victims of the incident.
The crash occurred on Sunday around 1:15 p.m. The twin-engine Cessna 310 aircraft was en route from Dimmit County Airport in Carrizo Springs, Texas to the Bridgeport Municipal Airport just northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
According to reports, the plane never reached its intended destination and was found crashed in a pasture about 10 miles southwest of its intended destination.
Smith’s significant contributions to his community were highlighted by Will Brewer, the superintendent of the Paradise Independent School District.
He expressed profound grief over the loss, describing Dr. Smith as an indispensable part of the school district, cherished for his passion for the district, and his impact as an alumnus, parent, and board member.
Smith, born and raised in Paradise, Texas, graduated from Texas A&M University at College Station.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed his residency at Virginia Tech/Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia.
His surgical expertise included bariatric surgery, colonoscopy, colorectal surgery, and surgical oncology. He was associated with My Bariatric Solutions, where his biography notes his commitment to his profession.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and other agencies are investigating to determine the cause of the crash. At this time, the specific circumstances leading to the accident remain unclear.
