Carl Weathers, widely recognized for his role as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” film series, has passed away due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a report released on Friday, February 9, 2024.
Weathers died peacefully in his sleep just after midnight on February 2, 2024, at his residence in Venice, California. He was 76. The announcement of his passing was made by his family, who described him as a remarkable individual who led an extraordinary life.
He had been battling the condition for several years before his death, which marked the end of a remarkable life that included significant contributions to film, television, and sports.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is caused by the accumulation of fatty deposits that harden and narrow the arteries, hindering blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease due to reduced circulation.
Born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Weathers started his journey to fame on the football field. He played college football at San Diego State University before joining the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in 1970. However, his NFL career was brief, lasting only two seasons and eight games.
His shift to acting, though, secured his place in entertainment history and showcased his exceptional talent and versatility. Over five decades, Weathers’ Hollywood career was marked by a variety of roles that demonstrated his wide-ranging abilities.
His memorable portrayal of Apollo Creed, first seen in the 1976 film “Rocky”, became a symbol of perseverance and strength, qualities that Weathers embodied throughout his career. His significant roles in “Predator,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Mandalorian,” in addition to his voice acting in the “Toy Story” franchise and appearances on “Arrested Development,” underscore his dedication to excellence and storytelling.
Weathers’ contributions to the arts extended beyond acting. He also directed episodes of “The Mandalorian,” demonstrating his versatility and commitment to his craft. His work on the series earned him an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Prior to his death, Weathers was featured in a Super Bowl commercial for FanDuel alongside former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. The commercial was broadcast during the Super Bowl and included a special tribute to Weathers.
The entertainment industry continues to honor Weathers’ memory, with particularly poignant words from Sylvester Stallone, his longtime friend and co-star in the “Rocky” series. Stallone’s comments provided a deep understanding of their personal and professional relationship. In the wake of Weathers’ passing, Stallone voiced his profound sadness, highlighting the significant role Weathers played in his career and life.
“The depth of my grief is hard to articulate. I’m striving to maintain composure. Carl Weathers played a crucial role in my life and career. I owe him a great deal,” Stallone reflected, standing in front of a painting depicting their characters in combat.
Stallone added, “From the moment he walked into the room, I recognized his exceptional talent.”
With a career that combined athleticism and artistry, Weathers leaves an enduring legacy through his memorable performances and the lives he influenced.
Weathers is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons.
