In an event that stunned Chile, former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, 74, lost his life in a helicopter accident in the southern part of the country.

The fatal crash took place close to the town of Lago Ranco, an idyllic spot where Piñera frequently vacationed during the summer months. Piñera was at the controls of the helicopter when it plunged into a nearby lake. Remarkably, the three other individuals on board survived the crash on February 6, 2024.

Sebastián Piñera, a skilled pilot known for his adventurous nature and passion for aviation, was piloting the helicopter when the accident occurred. The helicopter descended into a lake in the Region de Los Lagos, trapping Piñera in the wreckage. His body was later retrieved, marking a tragic end to a man who had twice held the country’s highest office.

Throughout significant periods of Chile’s recent history, Piñera’s political career was prominent, serving two non-consecutive terms from 2010 to 2014 and then from 2018 to 2022. His presidency was punctuated by notable events, including the globally praised rescue of 33 miners trapped underground in 2010, which garnered him international recognition. However, his tenure was also marred by large-scale protests in 2019 over issues of inequality, highlighting the multifaceted legacy he leaves behind.

Aside from his political pursuits, Piñera was a successful businessman, amassing wealth in diverse sectors such as banking and telecommunications. His business prowess was well-recognized, as was his inclination for risk-taking, both characteristics that were evident in his political career. Despite controversies and difficulties, including widespread protests against his administration, Piñera’s leadership during periods of economic expansion and crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has had a substantial impact on Chile’s recent history.

Initial reports indicated that there was heavy rainfall in the area during the incident. Autopsy results verified that Piñera’s cause of death was drowning, a grim conclusion to the event that has triggered a global wave of condolences. President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning in respect of Piñera, acknowledging his contributions to the country despite their political disagreements.

Leaders from across Latin America and beyond extended their condolences, recognizing Piñera’s influence in Chilean politics and his efforts to steer the country through various challenges. His passing has initiated reflections on his legacy, both as a leader who aimed to instigate change and as a controversial figure whose policies ignited considerable debate and protest.
