Former National Football League (NFL) guard, Tony Hutson, who played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins, died on February 3, 2024, at age 49. The announcement of his death was made by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services on their online platform. The cause of his death has not been made public.

Hutson was born in Houston, Texas, on March 13, 1974. His football career started at MacArthur High School, where he played as an offensive tackle. He honed his skills at Kilgore College before transferring to Northeastern Oklahoma State University. Hutson earned NAIA All-American honors in 1994 and 1995, thanks to his outstanding performance on the field.

Despite his impressive college record, Hutson faced adversity at the start of his professional career. The Raiders discovered a benign tumor on his right lung during a routine physical examination in 1996. Following successful surgery to remove the tumor, Hutson signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent.

Overcoming misfortune, Hutson displayed tremendous resilience and determination during his stint with the Cowboys. He spent 1996 on the practice squad and missed much of the 1997 training camp due to wrist surgery. However, he made his first debut later that year and had his first start in a notable 17-14 win over Washington.

Hutson’s NFL career spanned six years, from 1996 to 2001. He played as a guard for the Dallas Cowboys and had a brief stint with the Washington Redskins as a free agent. In 2001, he was signed by the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. Despite facing numerous injuries and challenges, Hutson left an indelible mark, especially in protecting Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman.

Randall Godfrey, one of Hutson’s teammates, remembered his dedication to football and his team, describing Hutson as one of his favorite teammates and a close friend.

Apart from his on-field achievements, Hutson was known for his off-field contributions and character. He was recognized for his sense of humor, kindness, and active participation in charitable activities, particularly those aimed at children. His legacy extends beyond his exploits on the football field.

Hutson is survived by his mother, Joyce Figures of Dumas, AR, his daughter Lauren Benton, and sons, Christian Benton and Antonio Fleming, all of Houston, TX, along with several siblings.
