Highly regarded Hollywood music producer William James Edwards III, 46, was allegedly murdered by Kayla Delise Mackie, a 27-year-old homeless woman, who has been charged with the crime.
The fatal shooting took place on January 25, 2024, when Edwards was inside his vehicle on the 2600 block of 29th Street, near Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica, California. He was found critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Mackie is also facing charges of attempted murder and second-degree robbery related to separate incidents. She was arrested in West Los Angeles the day following the shooting due to key witness statements.
The exact motive behind Edwards’ killing remains the subject of ongoing investigation.
Edwards was a pivotal figure in the music industry, contributing to numerous projects, managing a recording studio in Hollywood, and working with artists such as Travis Scott and Lil Cobaine. He also produced the 2018 film “Haunting on Fraternity Row,” among other short films.
Following the tragic incident, tributes poured in from the music industry, with artists like Lil Cobaine remembering Edwards as not just a colleague but as a family member, celebrating a nine-year relationship filled with memorable moments and shared journeys.
Expressing his deep regret over the tragic event, Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock praised the rapid response of the local police in apprehending the suspect, emphasizing the city’s commitment to combating violent crime, particularly gun violence.
Edwards is survived by his wife and two young sons. A GoFundMe campaign has been started to financially assist his family during this difficult time, highlighting Edwards’ exceptional talent and accomplishments.
Mackie is currently held on a $2 million bond at the Century Regional Detention Facility, awaiting her court hearing scheduled for March 21.
