In a shocking incident, a newly married couple was fatally shot at the Sports Page Barr in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, during the early hours of Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Gina Weingart, 37, an employee at the bar, and her husband, Emerson Weingart, 33, became victims. Police have taken a person of interest into custody.
The incident happened shortly after midnight, prompting a 911 call to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office reporting a shooting at the Sports Page Barr.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the couple had already succumbed to their injuries. The horrific event has deeply affected the small Elkhorn community, where such violent crimes are uncommon.
The Weingarts, who married in June 2023, were well-known at the Sports Page Barr. Gina worked part-time as a bartender, and Emerson frequently joined her during her late-night shifts.
Bar owner Jordan Barr took to Facebook to share his sorrow, describing the Weingarts as cherished friends and esteemed members of the Sports Page family. He strongly denounced the act, reflecting the sentiments of the entire community.
Elkhorn police have been meticulously investigating the case. On Monday, they revealed a significant development: a person of interest was arrested on an unrelated charge. The investigation into the shooting’s motive and circumstances is ongoing.
Investigations will determine whether the shooting was a targeted act or a random occurrence. The motive behind the tragedy is yet to be ascertained.
Leland Weingart, Emerson’s brother, conveyed the family’s heartbreak: “We are all just devastated right now and pray that Emerson and Gina get the justice they deserve.”
The funeral services for the couple are slated for Saturday, February 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burlington, Wisconsin.
