Former Major League Baseball pitcher and father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Patrick Mahomes Sr. was apprehended on DWI charges in Tyler, Texas on Saturday night, February 3. This is reportedly his third such offense, according to jail records.
The arrest occurred before his son, Patrick Mahomes II, took on a pivotal role in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes Sr., aged 53, was released from the Smith County Jail on Sunday after posting a $10,000 surety bond. His previous encounters with the law include a 2018 DWI conviction, which led to a 40-day jail term served on weekends.
The Chiefs’ star player was asked about his father’s arrest at a media event held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Mahomes II addressed the issue but expressed his wish not to delve too deeply into the matter, citing it as a personal family situation. “He’s doing good for whatever the situation is,” he stated.
Mahomes Sr. had an illustrious 11-season MLB career from 1992 to 2003, playing for various teams including the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. He also played in the 1999 National League playoffs with the Mets. Apart from his sports career, he hosts a podcast named “The Big Mahomes Show,” where he explores the complexities of professional sports.
The timing of the arrest brought additional personal pressure to Mahomes II, right before the Super Bowl on February 11. Such family incidents often attract unwanted public and media scrutiny.
Considering this is his third DWI offense, Mahomes Sr. could face significant penalties if found guilty, which might include a prison term of two to ten years, emphasizing the seriousness of repeat DWI offenses in Texas.
Mahomes Sr. has three children: sons Patrick Mahomes II and Jackson Mahomes, shared with his former wife Randi Martin, and daughter Zoe Mahomes, from a subsequent relationship.
