Law enforcement in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a city roughly 15 miles southeast of Tulsa, is investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister, found dead in their residence.
The Broken Arrow Police Department received a tip about a potential suicide on Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2024, which led to the discovery.
Relatives of the teenagers discovered the male sibling’s body, while the responding officers found the girl’s body upon arrival.
The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office, following a preliminary review, attributed the girl’s death to strangulation. Initial findings point towards the boy’s death being a suicide.
The parents were not home at the moment of the incident, a fact that has left many aspects of the case unclear.
The two deceased teenagers were enrolled in the Broken Arrow Public Schools system. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, authorities have withheld the names of the minors.
Responding to such incidents is among the toughest tasks for law enforcement. Broken Arrow Police Captain Josh McCoy stated, “Cases involving deceased children deeply affect us.”
A local resident who was interviewed by a media outlet described the children as “well-mannered” and their parents as “outstanding neighbors”.
The Broken Arrow Police Department is working closely with the local school district to provide necessary resources to the students and staff affected by the incident. Counselors have been assigned to the schools to offer psychological support to the impacted students and educators.
The goal of the ongoing police investigation is to understand the events leading up to the deaths and provide support to the family, friends, and community during this difficult period. No conjectures are being made about the motivations behind the deaths, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
