Two satellites collide in space
The American commercial communications satellite Iridium 33 and the Russian military satellite Kosmos 2251 collided in low Earth orbit, creating thousands of pieces of debris.
The collision was the first-ever recorded incident of two satellites colliding in space, and it highlighted the growing issue of orbital debris.
An aircraft carrier collides with a destroyer in Australia, killing 82
The Australian destroyer HMAS Voyager collided with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne off the coast of New South Wales. The Voyager was struck by the bow of the Melbourne, sliced in half, and sank, resulting in the deaths of 82 sailors. The collision was the worst peacetime disaster in the history of the Royal Australian Navy, and an extensive investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident.
