Hawaii hosts the first Ironman Triathlon
The race, which consisted of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, was the brainchild of Navy Commander John Collins and his wife, Judy. Only 15 people participated in the first race, and only 12 completed it. The grueling event has since become one of the most iconic endurance races in the world, with participants from all over the globe competing for the coveted title of “Ironman.”

Pluto is discovered
The dwarf planet Pluto was officially discovered by Clyde Tombaugh, an astronomer at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Using a telescope and photographs of the night sky, Tombaugh discovered a tiny, faint object moving through the sky. The discovery was announced to the world by the observatory’s director, V.M. Slipher, and the planet was named “Pluto” after the Roman god of the underworld. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, but it remains a fascinating celestial object to this day.
