Law enforcement officials confirmed on February 26 that an investigation was begun after the bodies of a man and a woman were found with gunshot wounds in the Moxy Boston Downtown hotel, situated at 240 Tremont Street in the lively Theater District of Boston, Massachusetts.
The Boston Police Department was called to the hotel just before 12:30 p.m. after receiving a report about two deceased individuals at the specified location.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene upon the officers’ arrival. A source from law enforcement revealed that the deceased were a 43-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman.
The Moxy Boston Downtown, a property of Marriott International, is recognized for its contemporary amenities and its close proximity to several popular attractions in Boston like Fenway Park, Boston Common, and numerous art galleries and theaters. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin R. Hayden has tried to alleviate public anxiety by stating that it’s “way too early to tell” whether foul play was involved in the deaths, and that there is no immediate need for public worry.
As news about the investigation spread, unrest amongst the hotel guests increased with many seeking further information concerning the safety implications of the incident. The medical examiner’s office was observed removing the bodies from the hotel at approximately 3 p.m. on the day they were discovered.
A firearm was discovered at the scene. Police have not identified a suspect or indicated if one of the victims could have been the shooter. Autopsies have been scheduled.
Hotel guests, such as Samantha Poorman from Michigan, expressed their shock and concern. “This is insane. I mean there is no soundproofing in those rooms either, I mean I listen to the people next to me who watch movies all night. So the fact that nobody heard anything…,” she commented.
