Beard’s death was announced on March 6, following his passing on March 2 at a New York City hospital. Aged 63, Beard succumbed to complications from a sudden illness, according to a representative.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Beard migrated to New York City in 1985, launching a remarkable career in the music industry. His skills led him to tour across the United States, performing alongside various jazz and rock musicians. In 2008, Beard joined Steely Dan, a partnership that endured until his last days.

Beard’s musical expertise expanded beyond his tenure with Steely Dan, most recently joining the Eagles on their “Long Goodbye” tour, which concluded with an unforgettable performance in Phoenix, Arizona on January 20.

Throughout his career, Beard worked with numerous music industry luminaries, including Dizzy Gillespie, the Brecker Brothers, Dianne Reeves, Meshell Ndegeocello, Toninho Horta, and Steve Vai, as stated in his online biography. His compositional skills were notable, with over 100 pieces recorded by artists like John McLaughlin and Michael Brecker, demonstrating his versatility and innovation.

Following Beard’s death, the music world has been swift to express its grief and admiration. Drummer Peter Erskine described Beard as “the glue and such a great presence on many projects,” expressing his sorrow over the loss of Beard and his musical sharpness. “You made a difference, Jim,” he stated.

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel also praised Beard as a “musical giant” and a source of “inspiration to many.” Wendel expressed his gratitude for having had the chance to know Beard, highlighting the profound impact he had on his colleagues.

Apart from his notable musical contributions, Beard’s legacy includes his role as an educator and mentor, imparting his knowledge and passion for music to future generations. His influence reached beyond performance and production, impacting many through his teaching and his powerful creative spirit.
