Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton openly discussed the age of President Joe Biden on a Super Tuesday (March 5) episode of “Mornings with Zerlina” on SiriusXM. In her remarks, she threw her support behind the 81-year-old President’s re-election bid, despite growing concerns about his age.
During the conversation, Clinton candidly addressed Biden’s age, stating, “Let’s accept the fact that Joe Biden is old.”
She underscored the electoral choice confronting voters: a decision between Biden and 77-year-old former President Donald Trump. Clinton positioned the election as a choice between a seasoned but effective leader who does not pose a threat to democracy (Biden) and an older individual who lacks coherence and is perceived as a threat to democratic values (Trump). Clinton’s argument prioritized democratic principles and leadership effectiveness over age-centric concerns.
A substantial number of voters are anxious about Biden’s age and his mental ability to handle a second term, according to poll data. A survey conducted by The New York Times/Siena College revealed that 61% of those who backed Biden in 2020 currently consider him too old to serve effectively. This sentiment is shared by nearly 73% of all registered voters. However, only 42% perceive Trump in the same light, with just 14% of his past supporters agreeing.
A poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that more than 60% of American adults question Biden’s mental capacity to carry out presidential duties effectively. A similar concern exists for Trump, with 57% expressing doubts about his mental sharpness. These poll results highlight the significant role that perceptions of age and mental fitness play in the 2024 presidential election.
Clinton also mentioned a report by Special Counsel Robert Hur that described Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Although this characterization of Biden might pose a challenge, Clinton’s argument deviates towards a larger, value-oriented choice for voters, focusing on safeguarding democracy and upholding the rule of law.
Despite these challenges, Clinton’s backing of Biden underscores the need to choose a leader who protects democratic values. Her comments come at a pivotal time as the country deliberates on issues of leadership, age, and democratic integrity in the run-up to another presidential election.
