A somber mood has engulfed the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) in Texas, following the discovery of two elementary school teachers dead in their home during spring break.
Gene Mark Hudgson Sjogreen Jr., 34, and Mariana Alba Garcia, 34, both educators in the district, were found dead on Monday, March 11, during a welfare check conducted by Fort Bend County Sheriff’s deputies at their home in the quiet neighborhood of Richmond, about 30 miles southwest of downtown Houston.
Garcia’s father had gone to the home when he hadn’t heard from the couple since Friday. He looked in a back window and saw signs of an altercation, at which point he called the police.
The married couple, both pillars of their community and educators, taught third and fourth grade, respectively, at Taylor Ray Elementary School and Jane Long Elementary School.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide, with early reports indicating that a firearm was used by Sjogreen to kill Garcia and then himself. Due to the peaceful reputation of their community, neighbors expressed shock and sorrow, noting the absence of any preceding disturbances or signs of trouble at the couple’s home. This revelation has only compounded the grief felt by those who knew the couple, both described as ideal neighbors and dedicated educators.
The Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, in response to this devastating loss, issued a statement to parents and the community, acknowledging the profound impact Hudgson Jr. and Garcia had on their students and colleagues. “We mourn the loss of not just colleagues but friends and educators who have touched the lives of many within our district,” the statement read, emphasizing the district’s commitment to supporting everyone affected through counseling services and other forms of assistance.
Counseling support, according to reports, has been made readily available for students, staff, and family members struggling to come to terms with the loss. Garcia, remembered fondly for her dedication and passion, was recently honored as a staff member of the month, a testament to her commitment to education and her students.
The investigation into the deaths continues, with law enforcement officials working to piece together the events leading up to the incident
