An attack on the SYL Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, was effectively brought to a close with the deaths of the attackers. The hotel is strategically located in a fortified region near crucial governmental edifices, including the Presidential Palace, making it a popular spot for lawmakers and government officials.
The assault, which was initiated on the evening of March 14, 2024, was a 13-hour ordeal, culminating in the elimination of five al-Shabab assailants who had forcefully gained entry into the building, as per police and security officials.
The offensive started with a major explosion, likely the work of a suicide bomber, aimed at the hotel’s entrance. This was subsequently followed by armed men entering the building amidst gunfire.
The al-Shabab group, known for its connections to al-Qaeda, declared via telegram on Thursday that their members had successfully infiltrated the hotel. This marks another episode in their ongoing conflict with the Somali government.
Kasim Roble, a police representative, reported on Friday the demise of three military personnel and injuries to 27 people during the hotel attack.
Roble confirmed the restoration of peace, stating, “The hotel has been secured, and as security returns to normal, parliament members and other occupants have started to return.”
Following the hotel siege, the press was barred from entering the premises.
Recently, the coastal capital has seen a marked reduction in attacks, as a result of improved security measures. Al-Shabab has a history of executing fatal attacks on hotels and other venues.
The last major incident in Mogadishu occurred in October 2022, when dual car explosions at a busy intersection led to the death of at least 120 civilians.
In response to the threat posed by the militant group, which the United States has classified as one of al-Qaida’s most dangerous branches, the Somali government is actively participating in a significant campaign against these extremists.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia has publicly pledged to launch a comprehensive offensive against these militants, who control large areas in central and southern Somalia and have been targeted by multiple American drone strikes over the years.
