On Saturday night, March 9, 2024, in Humble, Texas, a high school football star was fatally shot at a house party, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Jarvon Coles, an 18-year-old senior at North Shore High School, became the unintended victim of gunfire that erupted at the gathering, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).
Authorities were dispatched to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane around 11 p.m. following reports of underage drinking at a party attended by 50 to 60 people. The event was being held at an Airbnb rental property.
A subsequent emergency call to the same location led deputies to find Coles in the backyard suffering from what partygoers had thought was a seizure but in actuality was a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate CPR efforts, Coles died from his injuries shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
HCSO Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that the shooting appeared to be intentional, with one or two suspects firing toward the house from a block away before fleeing in a vehicle. The sheriff has appealed to the community for any surveillance footage that might help identify the suspects.
Coles was celebrated in his community not only for his athletic talents but also for his academic achievements. A two-time first-team all-district linebacker, Coles boasted a 4.1 GPA and had been accepted into 15 colleges. He had planned to attend Lamar University, where he intended to continue his football career.
The loss of Coles has deeply affected those who knew him, with his grandfather and guardian, Braxton Coles, expressing profound grief over the promising future that was violently cut short. Friends and teammates echoed this sentiment, highlighting Coles’ exceptional character both on and off the field.
The HCSO is actively pursuing the case, appealing to the public for any leads that could lead to the apprehension of the culprits.
The community plans to honor Coles’ memory with a balloon release at the Galena Park ISD football stadium.
