A horrifying incident unfolded in Duncanville, Texas on April 15, 2024, when a one-year-old toddler, Shiraz Asirvadam, was fatally attacked by three dogs at his babysitter’s residence.
According to the Duncanville Police Department, the babysitter owned four dogs. The three canines involved in the ordeal were identified as German Shepherd mixes by Duncanville Animal Control. One male dog weighed roughly 100 pounds, while the two females each weighed around 80 pounds.
The dogs were initially secured in a specific area but managed to gain access to the house, where they violently attacked the toddler. The babysitter attempted to intervene during the attack, resulting in her sustaining injuries as well.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 10:40 a.m., where they found the toddler unresponsive and immediately began life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the child was declared dead upon arrival at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
In the aftermath of the attack, the dogs were seized by Duncanville Animal Control. They are currently under quarantine, pending either the owner’s surrender of them or a legal decision to label them as “Dangerous Dogs.” The investigation also involves determining whether the babysitter was running an unlicensed daycare, as there were three other children in the house at the time. Texas Health and Human Services confirmed that the home does not hold a daycare license.
The Duncanville Police are currently considering possible criminal charges in collaboration with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the victim’s family. In a recent statement, the police mentioned that they will refrain from further comments regarding charges until consultations with all parties are finalized.
Matthew Stogner, the acting Chief of Duncanville Police, highlighted the severity of the incident and commended the swift response of the officers who tried to save the toddler’s life.
David Trout, related to the homeowner since she was his brother’s ex-wife, described her as a well-intentioned individual who has been providing childcare for family and neighbors for a long time without any incidents. “She’s a sweetheart. She means well. She’s taken care of kids down there forever without any problems,” Trout said in an interview with local media, expressing his grief over the situation.
The incident has sparked shock and sorrow within the community, with residents expressing their worries about large dogs being around small children. As the investigation continues, Duncanville Police and local authorities are working together to determine the next course of action, which may involve changes in local pet ownership and daycare operation regulations.
