Calvin LeBrun, widely recognized by his stage name Mister Cee, has died at the age of 57

LeBrun was a popular figure in the hip-hop community, known for his role as the DJ for rapper Big Daddy Kane and as a pivotal figure in the discovery and rise of The Notorious B.I.G.

Wednesday, April 10, Market President Chris Oliviero confirmed his death by stating, “Tonight I share the sad news of the sudden passing of our 94.7 The Block colleague & friend, Mister Cee, a true iconic personality that left a lasting mark on the music and lifestyle culture of New York City and beyond.”

Born and raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, LeBrun first gained prominence in the hip-hop scene through his work with Big Daddy Kane on the 1988 debut album “Long Live The Kane.” His influence quickly spread beyond music production; he became a beloved radio personality at Hot 97, where he hosted the popular shows “Throwback at Noon” and “Friday Night Live.”

LeBrun’s connection with Kevin “DJ 50 Grand” Griffin was instrumental in his encounter with Christopher Wallace, who would become known as The Notorious B.I.G. This meeting led to Wallace’s initial demo recordings, which launched his career. LeBrun was pivotal in these formative stages and later served as an associate producer on Wallace’s 1994 debut album, “Ready to Die.”

Despite facing personal controversies, including arrests related to soliciting prostitution that brought his sexuality into public discussion, LeBrun remained a respected figure in the hip-hop community. These personal challenges led to his resignation from Hot 97 in 2014, though he continued to work in radio at other stations.

LeBrun’s legacy is marked by his role in shaping the careers of significant hip-hop artists and his enduring influence on New York City’s DJ culture. As noted by Hot 97 in their statement, his work “shaped the very fabric of NYC’s DJ culture.”

He is survived by his family and a community of fans and fellow musicians who mourn his loss and celebrate his vast contributions to the music world.

Hot 97 and the broader music community have expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to his family and fans.
