An eighth-grade math teacher at Manatee Academy K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, Florida was tragically killed by her estranged husband in the parking lot of a West Palm Beach, Florida motel. Jamie Felix, 45, was shot in front of her two sons, 10 and 17 years old.
The incident unfolded on March 29, 2024. Jamie Felix and her sons were leaving a recreational establishment when they were ambushed by 60-year-old Ray Felix. Disguised and carrying a firearm, Ray Felix forced his family into a rented Nissan. Under his command, Jamie Felix sent a disturbing email to her colleagues at Manatee Academy, which was promptly reported to the police by her alarmed coworkers.
The root of the conflict was the couple’s ongoing divorce. After driving around for several hours, they returned to their initial location. Ray Felix then instructed his older son to drive the rental car, while he, Jamie, and the younger son followed in their Chevrolet SUV.
That same night, their journey ended in a hotel parking lot in West Palm Beach. The exact details of the ensuing confrontation are unclear, but Jamie Felix was shot multiple times. Despite the swift arrival of first responders, she was declared dead at the scene.
Ray Felix fled the scene but was found by police less than a mile away. When confronted by officers, he took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Ray Felix had a history of domestic violence and was arrested in October 2023 after a dispute at the couple’s residence. Following his arrest, legal measures included a court order forbidding Ray Felix to contact Jamie Felix and one of their children. Ray Felix, who was also previously employed at Manatee Academy, resigned after his arrest.
The tragic death of Jamie Felix has deeply impacted the Manatee Academy community. Students have created a heartfelt tribute at the school to remember their beloved teacher.
“Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and all who knew her during this time of sorrow… Jamie was a beacon of happiness, enthusiasm, and commitment for her students and colleagues, and her absence is deeply felt,” a school district representative stated.
Jamie Felix was highly regarded as a math teacher. Tessa Alette, a former student, remembered her fondly. According to Alette, Jamie Felix was more than just a teacher; she was a confidante for students and often provided for them throughout the school day. The phrase “school mom,” etched on the memorial, perfectly captures her nurturing nature.
While contributing to the memorial, another student expressed admiration for Jamie Felix, particularly her dedication to her students’ welfare.
The district has announced that on-site grief support will be available for an indefinite period for those affected by this tragedy.
