Two young siblings lost their lives, and 15 people were injured when an intoxicated driver plowed into the Swan Boat Club during a children’s birthday party.
Monroe County, Michigan authorities confirmed the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the club, situated about 30 miles south of Detroit.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough detailed that the victims, an eight-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another sibling was reported to be among the injured. During a news conference on Saturday evening, Sheriff Goodnough recounted the emergency response operations and confirmed the gravity of the situation.
The 66-year-old female driver reportedly lost control of her SUV, striking the north wall of the building and continuing its destructive path about 25 feet into the structure. She was arrested at the scene under suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death. Officials anticipate more charges as the investigation into the crash continues.
Describing the scene as “extremely chaotic,” Sheriff Goodnough noted the profound emotional distress evident among first responders and witnesses alike. Emergency medical personnel provided immediate aid to 15 injured people, comprising both children and adults. Six adults and three children sustained life-threatening injuries and were urgently transported to area hospitals by helicopter and ambulance.
The investigation has extended to a local tavern located several miles from the boat club, where the driver is suspected to have been before the accident. Law enforcement officials temporarily shut down the establishment and executed a search warrant to gather more evidence related to the crash.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Swan Boat Club issued a statement on Facebook announcing its closure until further notice to facilitate emergency response efforts. The club personnel also expressed their deep gratitude for the community’s support and requested continued thoughts and prayers.
As the legal proceedings against the accused driver continue, she remains detained at Monroe County Jail. Details about her cooperation with law enforcement and any legal representation have not yet been released.
The Berlin Township community, along with the broader Monroe County area, has shown immense solidarity in the face of this incident. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with the medical and funeral expenses of the affected families, reflecting the community’s commitment to supporting its members during times of need.
