6 Dead and 10 Injured in Highway Crash

In a distressing incident on U.S. Highway 20 near Idaho Falls, Idaho, six individuals lost their lives and another 10 sustained injuries. The accident happened early on Saturday, May 18, 2024, when an eastbound pickup truck swerved into the oncoming lane, crashing head-on into a westbound passenger van.

The Idaho State Police confirmed that the driver of the van and five passengers were pronounced dead at the site of the accident. The pickup truck driver and nine other occupants of the van were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries.

The emergency services were alerted about the accident near the Lindsay Boulevard exit at around 5:29 a.m. The van could be seen lying on its side, with its rear doors flung open and the front severely damaged. The pickup truck, a Ram, was found a few feet away with a shattered windshield and a destroyed hood. Debris from the vehicles was strewn all over the highway.

First responders, including teams from the Idaho Falls Police Department, Idaho Transportation Department, and Idaho Falls Fire Department, arrived promptly at the scene. The highway was blocked in both directions for about five and a half hours. The westbound lane remained shut for an additional hour while crews cleared the wreckage and carried on with their investigation. The Idaho State Police stated that the investigation into the cause of the pickup truck’s sudden swerve is ongoing.

The six victims, all from Mexico, were identified by the Bonneville County coroner as Abel Mejía Martínez, 43, Pedro Manuel Alcantar Mejía, 26, Brandon Ponce Gallegos, 24, Jose Guadalupe Sánchez Medina, 20, Luis Enrique Sereno Perez, 32, and Javier Gomez Alcantar, 36.

Officials are advising drivers to be extra cautious, especially during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, often referred to as the “100 deadliest days” due to the increased number of accidents during the summer travel season.

The incident has deeply affected the victims’ families and the community of Idaho Falls, and the road to recovery will be a long one. It is hoped that through increased awareness and preventive measures, the number of such accidents can be reduced in the future.
