An alarming spectacle unfolded on Tuesday, May 7, as the New York Police Department (NYPD) reported the discovery of a severed human head in the waters of Jamaica Bay near the Shellbank Basin, in close proximity to JFK International Airport, New York. The discovery has spurred an investigation to ascertain the identity of the victim and explore any potential link to an earlier case in the vicinity.
The disturbing discovery was made around 10:10 am near Cross Bay Boulevard and 165th Avenue in the Howard Beach neighborhood. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit was immediately mobilized to the location, as per official reports.
Investigators are presently examining if the severed head bears any connection to the case of Lukasz Mikolajewicz, a 46-year-old resident of Ozone Park, whose headless corpse was found by a fishing duo on April 12, about 600 yards west of the Cross Bay Bridge.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the city’s Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Mikolajewicz’s death a suicide. Kenny revealed that surveillance footage showed an individual, clad in black, walking alone onto the bridge and subsequently disappearing. The clothing on the deceased matched that of the person in the footage, and a green rope tied to a metal railing was found at the spot where the individual was last seen.
The ongoing investigation is focused on establishing whether the discovered head and body belong to the same person. To confirm this, authorities are resorting to DNA testing.
Mikolajewicz’s family revealed that he had made four previous attempts to end his own life.
