On the morning of May 25, 2024, two-time PGA Tour victor, Grayson Murray, took his own life. This occurred a day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, due to illness. Murray was 30.

His parents, Eric and Terry Murray, shared their heartbreak and gratitude for the support they’ve received in a statement released on Sunday. “We have spent the past day trying to accept that our son is no longer with us,” they revealed. “It’s surreal to not only face this reality ourselves but also to share it with the world. It feels like a nightmare.”

Murray was candid regarding his alcohol addiction and mental health battles, including depression and anxiety. Earlier this year, he staged a remarkable comeback by triumphing at the Sony Open in Hawaii. “It took me a long time to reach this stage,” Murray stated in January. “That was more than seven years ago. I’m a changed man now. I wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t stopped drinking eight months ago.”

Murray’s professional journey began with apparent promise. In 2017, he achieved full status on the PGA Tour and won the Barbasol Championship at the age of 23. He was also a successful junior golfer, clinching the Junior World Championship in San Diego, California, three times.

However, Murray’s career path was fraught with obstacles. Prior to turning professional in 2016, he attended three different colleges. In 2021, he faced suspension from the PGA Tour following an incident related to alcohol. He was loved and will be missed.”

The PGA Tour has announced the availability of grief counselors at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events this week.
