5 Family Members Dead in Car Crash With FedEx Truck

In a tragic event on Tuesday night, May 28, 2024, a family of five from Eagle Pass, Texas succumbed to their injuries after a vehicular collision. The accident occurred around 8 p.m. on U.S. Highway 57, approximately nine miles east of Eagle Pass.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that a gray 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, carrying the family, was heading west when it encountered a 2019 Ford FedEx box truck traveling eastbound. The FedEx truck crossed into the SUV’s lane, resulting in a head-on collision. The occupants of the SUV, including the driver, Joanna Martinez, 34, and passengers Samantha Martinez, 25, Noemi Jimenez Martinez, 61, and Jose Martinez, 71, died at the scene. A ten-year-old girl, whose identity remains undisclosed, passed away while en route to Fort Duncan Medical Center.

A FedEx representative expressed their condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this accident, and we offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends grieving their loved ones. Safety remains our top priority, and we will fully cooperate with the authorities during their investigation.”

The FedEx truck driver was injured in the collision and was taken to a local hospital. The exact nature and severity of his injuries have not been released to the public.

Texas DPS troopers have initiated an investigation into the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that the FedEx truck veered out of its lane, causing the crash. Factors such as driver distraction, impairment, or mechanical failure are being examined as possible causes.

A friend of the family described them as closely bonded. “They were always together and supporting each other,” the friend said. “It’s hard to believe they’re gone.”

The loss has greatly impacted the community of Eagle Pass, Texas. Residents have expressed their shock and sorrow as they grapple with the sudden tragedy.

In light of the accident, Texas DPS underscored the significance of road safety. “Accidents like this highlight the importance of safe driving practices,” said Texas Highway Patrol Staff Sergeant Rene Cordova. “We must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the road.”

Efforts to honor the lives lost and support the bereaved family are underway, with community members organizing fundraisers and memorials to assist with funeral expenses.
