Kevin Costner, the well-known actor, recently disclosed the previously unshared story about his intention to include Princess Diana in a follow-up to his 1992 blockbuster, “The Bodyguard.” The project, which was initiated with the help of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, was never realized due to Diana’s unexpected death.

Costner talked about this potential project on an episode of PeopleTV’s “Couch Surfing.” He explained that the idea was conceived in the mid-1990s, and Ferguson played a significant part in its development. “Sarah was really important,” stated Costner. “She helped facilitate the discussion between Diana and me and was supportive of the concept.”

The sequel would have depicted Costner’s character, Frank Farmer, safeguarding the character of Diana from paparazzi and stalkers, eventually leading to a love affair. The idea piqued Diana’s interest, and she even inquired about a kissing scene with a blend of apprehension and curiosity. Costner remembered, “She was very respectful and a bit nervous because her life was regulated. Despite her nervousness, Diana was prepared to take on the challenge of acting in a Hollywood film.”

After Diana’s fatal car crash in August 1997 at the age of 36, the project was abruptly halted, just a day after Costner received the screenplay for the sequel. Years later, Costner had a private conversation with Diana’s son, Prince William. In this interaction, Prince William disclosed a personal feeling. “The first thing he said was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you,'” recalled Costner. He was both surprised and moved, responding humbly, “I know.”

Costner showed a high regard for Prince William, characterizing their conversation as pleasant. “We talked for about half an hour,” Costner stated. “I’ll never disclose what we discussed, but it was a lovely thing.”

Reflecting on the unrealized project, Costner talked about how close it was to becoming a reality and expressed his admiration for both Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s support.

While the film was never produced, the revelation from Costner provides an insight into what could have been an intriguing intersection of Hollywood and royalty.
