The remains of 60-year-old Cynthia “Cindy” Roberson Gobble and 59-year-old Gregory Wayne Gobble were discovered in a forested region in Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple had been reported missing, and their bodies were located on the morning of May 31, 2024, concluding the search sprung from an Ashanti Alert for Cynthia.
The investigation started on Thursday evening, May 30, when relatives requested a welfare check for Cynthia at her residence in Mocksville, North Carolina. Upon arrival, Davie County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the house vacant. Cynthia’s purse, wallet, and insulin were left behind, indicating she had not left of her own accord.
Officials promptly suspected a crime, especially considering Cynthia’s ongoing divorce and separation process from Gregory. The couple’s family reported that they had not been able to reach them since late Wednesday afternoon. The search for the Gobbles was amplified, with deputies examining known locations. Gregory was quickly identified as a person of interest, and the search was concentrated on his white Ford truck.
On Friday, a call was received by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office about two bodies discovered near Sheffield Road, just beyond the Iredell-Davie County border. The bodies were confirmed to be Cynthia and Gregory, both with gunshot wounds. The murder weapon was found in the vicinity.
Evidence at the scene suggests that Gregory murdered Cynthia before taking his own life. “It’s a tragic end to a very concerning case,” announced Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this incident.”
Cynthia had recently initiated legal separation, alleging cyberstalking and the installation of a tracking device on her car by Gregory. Court documents also revealed Gregory’s erratic behavior, attempts to isolate Cynthia from her relatives, and his refusal to work or share in living expenses after they wed in 2012 and he moved into her deceased ex-husband’s house. Cynthia was granted sole ownership of their shared house by the court. The sudden disappearance of Cynthia and the later discovery of the bodies have stunned the community.
Expressing his sorrow on social media, Cynthia’s son wrote about his disbelief and agony over his mother’s loss. He likened the situation to a nightmare and wrote, “I’m trying to process what happened, but it all seems like a nightmare until I realize I’ll never be able to tell my Mom I love her again.”
The case has been closed by the authorities, who stated that there is no continuing threat to the public and no other suspects involved. However, they are pursuing additional information about the couple’s activities between Wednesday and Thursday.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with further information to come forward.
