Over the weekend on May 25, 2024, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, and her husband, Prince William, issued a public statement expressing their grief over the death of Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot Mark Long. Long tragically lost his life in a crash involving a World War II-era Spitfire plane during a Battle of Britain event.
The statement from the royal couple began, “Incredibly sad to hear of the news this afternoon from RAF Coningsby. Our thoughts tonight are with the pilot’s family, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the entire RAF community,” and was signed “W & C” for William and Catherine.
The fatal crash happened near the RAF Coningsby base in eastern England, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway. The Spitfire, a historic World War II aircraft, was part of a memorial event when the crash occurred. As a result of the accident, the RAF temporarily grounded all Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes pending the outcome of the investigation.
RAF Group Captain Robbie Lees, Commander of the Display Air Wing, paid tribute to Long, 43, describing him as “a great friend, colleague, and a passionate, professional aviator.” Lees stated that the RAF would not comment further until the investigation is concluded.
This public statement is one of the few from Kate since her cancer diagnosis was made public in March 2024. Since then, she has largely withdrawn from public engagements, concentrating on her treatment and recuperation. In an emotional video message, Kate referred to her diagnosis as a “huge shock.”
A spokesperson for Kensington Palace confirmed that Kate remains closely involved with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, an organization she started nearly three years prior. The spokesperson informed BBC reporters that “Early childhood will continue to be central to her public work.”
Christian Guy, the executive director of the foundation, said that Kate is enthusiastic about the ongoing campaign. “The early years campaign is rolling on as she recovers,” he reported, emphasizing Kate’s commitment to her cause despite her illness.
Prince William, who himself has a strong connection to the military through his service as a search and rescue pilot for the RAF and as an air ambulance pilot, has been juggling his royal responsibilities while supporting his wife during her treatment. He recently revealed that their oldest son, Prince George, has shown an interest in pursuing a similar path, hinting at a “potential pilot in the making.”
Their youngest son, Prince Louis, celebrated his sixth birthday last month. Despite her health challenges, Kate was still able to take a photo to mark the occasion.
Kate’s absence from public events, such as the upcoming Trooping the Colour ceremony, is noticeable. Instead, Lieutenant General James Bucknall will act as the Inspecting Officer on June 8 in her stead. This arrangement underscores the seriousness of Kate’s condition and her need to prioritize her health.
