On June 7, 2024 a fatal car accident on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, Florida claimed the life of Kenna Wilson, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate and accomplished athlete. The late-night collision involved a 2015 Lexus sedan, driven by a 23-year-old Boca Raton resident, and Wilson’s 2008 Honda Accord. Wilson, who was a passenger in her vehicle, was accompanied by a 17-year-old male driver.

Just prior to the accident, Wilson had left Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital where she had tried to visit a friend in the emergency room. The impact of the collision forced both vehicles off the road and into trees. Although emergency responders transported the injured to nearby hospitals, Wilson was pronounced dead at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital at 3:27 a.m.

Wilson was a valued member of her community and a distinguished athlete at Martin County High School. She was part of the relay team that set a new school record in the final meet of the season.

Her coach, Chris Thompson, remembered Wilson as a “very fiery competitor,” noting her tenacity and team spirit. “The team worked together every day all season, doing workouts together, working on their relay handoff, just trying to put together that perfect race,” Thompson recounted.

Her alma mater extended their deepest sympathies in a Facebook post, urging the community to cherish their memories of her. The post acknowledged Wilson as a beloved member of the school community whose absence will be profoundly felt.

In the wake of her sudden death, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to cover Wilson’s medical and funeral costs and to provide support for her family during this difficult time. The campaign highlighted her plans to attend Indian River State College in the fall and paid tribute to her vibrant personality and the happiness she brought to those around her. The fundraiser has already raised over $25,000.

Wilson’s untimely death has greatly impacted her friends, family, and community. Her stepmother, Lorena Wilson, spoke about Kenna’s compassionate nature and determination, qualities that endeared her to many both on and off the track. A tribute described her as someone who “lit up every room she entered,” encapsulating her energetic and kind-hearted nature.
