A tragic accident claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman at K-Gym Fitness in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The fatal incident took place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, when she lost her balance while running on a treadmill near an open window. The chilling event was recorded on video.
The victim, known by her initials FN, had been on the treadmill for about half an hour when she paused to use a towel to wipe her face. She lost her footing, stumbling backwards off the machine and through a window located roughly two feet behind the treadmill. The window was only one foot off the floor.
Despite her attempt to hold onto the window frame, FN lost her grip and fell through the open window, plunging three stories to the ground below. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital with severe head trauma, but despite the efforts of the medical personnel, she died from her injuries. The autopsy results revealed significant bruising and lacerations on her head.
On the day of the incident, FN had visited the gym with her younger sibling and her boyfriend. They had suggested exercising on the second floor, but FN chose to use the treadmill on the third floor. The gym usually assigns a personal trainer to ensure all windows are closed, however, none were present at the time of the accident. A faded warning sticker on the window advising against opening it was also present but was not legible.
Commenting on the incident, Pontianak Police Commissioner Antonius Trias Kuncurojati highlighted the close proximity of the treadmill to the window and the low barrier which made it easy for someone to fall through. A negligence investigation against the gym is underway and its operating license is currently under review.
The head of the Pontianak City Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Service, Mr. Hidayati, made this statement: “This is a place where the treadmill has its back to the glass. It is very dangerous and there is no security. If we were exercising, accidents should have been anticipated. If someone falls, there must be security so that they don’t fall straight down and die.”
In response to the tragedy, the gym expressed its condolences to FN’s family and temporarily closed for three days to allow for a detailed investigation and as a sign of respect.
