A family vacation turned tragic when 13-year-old Anna Beaumont from Cardiff, Wales was discovered unresponsive in a pool at Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida. The incident occurred around 11:30 AM on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Anna was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and passed away the following day.
Anna, a student in Year 8 at Radyr Comprehensive School in Cardiff, was on vacation with her family at Discovery Cove, an all-inclusive day resort known for its interactive animal experiences, including swimming with dolphins and snorkeling among tropical fish. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office released a statement expressing their condolences. The county medical examiner confirmed the cause of death as drowning.
Discovery Cove, part of the SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment family, responded to the incident with a public statement: “Our thoughts are with this family. Staff attended to an emergency involving a guest and administered care until emergency personnel arrived. Once the emergency team was on the scene, they assumed care and transported the guest to a nearby hospital.” They also mentioned that no further comments would be made to respect the family’s privacy
Anna’s school, Radyr Comprehensive, is deeply affected by the loss. Headteacher Andrew Williams shared his thoughts: “The idea of losing a child is an unimaginable ordeal, and on behalf of the entire school community, I extend our deepest sympathies to Anna’s family as they cope with their loss. Anna was a beloved member of our school, and her absence will be deeply felt by students, staff, and everyone who knew the young girl. Her spirit, kindness, and presence left a lasting impact on many lives.”
The school emailed parents outlining their support plans for students, emphasizing the importance of listening to and encouraging students to express their feelings during this difficult time.
The UK Foreign Office has also been involved, offering consular support to Anna’s family. A spokesperson stated, “We are in touch with the family following the death of a child in the United States and are providing consular support during this difficult time.”
