A 35-year-old Brazilian musician died after being electrocuted during a live performance on Saturday, July 13, in Salinópolis, Pará state, Brazil. The incident occurred at the Solar Hotel, where Ayres Sasaki was performing when he hugged a fan who was soaking wet, causing a nearby cable to send out a fatal electric shock.
Some media sources suggest that he was playing his guitar when the accident occurred.
The Pará Civil Police have stated that they are conducting a thorough investigation. “We are interviewing witnesses and have requested expert reports to determine the precise cause of the electrical discharge,” a spokesperson for the police department told Istoé Gente.
The Solar Hotel released a statement on Sunday, July 14, expressing their condolences and commitment to cooperating with the investigation. “We are fully dedicated to providing support to his family and taking the necessary measures. We reaffirm our commitment to fully cooperating with the competent authorities for the proper clarification of the events,” the hotel stated via its official Instagram account.
Rita Matos, Sasaki’s aunt, mentioned that the family is in the process of gathering information to understand what transpired during the performance. “We are contacting people who were with him at the moment to understand how everything happened. We will gather all the information in a statement that we will release to the press,” Matos said in a statement to Istoé Gente.
Sasaki’s death has led to an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues alike. Raphael Macedo, a filmmaker and close friend of Sasaki, mourned his passing and remembered him for his vibrant personality and musical talent. “Ayres was more than just a talented musician; he was a joyful and kind friend. His loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him,” Macedo shared with Hindustan Times.
Sasaki, who also worked as an architect and urban planner, had married his wife, Mariana, just 11 months ago. Mariana has expressed her gratitude for the support and condolences received from fans and friends during this difficult time. “I am deeply touched by the messages of affection and comfort. Ayres was loved by many, and his music brought joy to countless people,” she posted on social media.
The Solar Hotel’s management has assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their venue and prevent similar incidents in the future. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and performers. We are reviewing all safety protocols and working closely with the authorities,” the hotel’s statement read.
This tragic incident is not the first of its kind in Brazil. In 2023, Pedro Henrique, a Brazilian gospel singer, also died on stage during a live performance in Feira de Santana. Henrique’s death was similarly attributed to an accidental electrocution, highlighting the potential dangers associated with live performances and electrical equipment.
As the investigation continues, fans of Ayres Sasaki have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late singer. Messages of condolences and memories of Sasaki’s performances have been flooding his official Instagram page. One fan wrote, “Your music and spirit will live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, Ayres.” Another added, “Thank you for the joy you brought into our lives through your music.”
Ayres Sasaki is survived by his wife Mariana, who continues to receive support from fans and loved ones. The family has requested privacy during this time as they mourn their loss and await further details from the ongoing investigation.
