An early morning car accident on Long Island, New York, on August 1, 2024, resulted in the tragic death of two teenagers and injuries to three other individuals. The fatal incident involved a 2010 Toyota Prius that overturned on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, leaving a scene of devastation behind.
The accident happened at approximately 2 a.m. near the 43A exit on the eastbound Southern State Parkway. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered the overturned Prius off the road in a forested area. Oliver Charles, an 18-year-old from Deer Park, was identified as the driver, and Dymond Saunders, a 17-year-old from West Babylon, was one of the passengers. Both teenagers were declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel, causing profound grief among their loved ones.
Three additional passengers in the vehicle, whose names have not been released, were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The New York State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and have asked for any witnesses or individuals with information to assist in the investigation.
Ty Bridges, a neighbor who witnessed Saunders entering the Prius on the night of the accident, expressed his shock at the tragic event. He described Saunders as a vibrant, friendly teenager and mentioned a red Buick which she cherished as her own.
Young drivers on Long Island are at a heightened risk of accidents due to hazardous driving behaviors and demanding road conditions. In 2023, the region experienced its most deadly year for young drivers in the age group of 16 to 20, with 32 fatal crashes exceeding the previous record of 29 in 2015. The rise in these figures can be linked to factors such as changes in driver’s education during the pandemic, which resulted in limited in-car instruction, and a notable increase in speeding. The intricate road conditions on Long Island, characterized by winding, tree-lined roads designed for slower speeds, pose a further risk to inexperienced drivers.
To support the grieving families, local churches and organizations are offering counseling and aid. A tribute for Charles and Saunders has been planned where their loved ones and community members will gather to honor their lives, and recall cherished memories.
