Renowned Hollywood actor Jack Nicholson was informed of the death of his longtime agent and close friend, Sandy Bresler, on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Bresler, who was 87, succumbed to a brief illness. He had been Nicholson’s representative for over six decades, steering him through some of the most memorable roles in the film industry.
A statement released by Bresler’s family revealed that he died in Santa Monica, California. He was renowned for his commitment to his clients and his talent management strategies, playing a crucial role in shaping Nicholson’s career. Their relationship dates back to the early 1960s when they both served in the California Air National Guard, resulting in a partnership that lasted more than 60 years.
In his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 1999 Golden Globes, Nicholson humorously mentioned Bresler, stating, “There is only one agent who has stayed with me, guided me, tolerated my tantrums, my operatic behavior and so forth. His name escapes me,” before warmly adding, “Sandy Bresler, my pal, and comrade in arms.”
Bresler started his career in 1960 as a secretary at the William Morris Agency, swiftly establishing a reputation for himself. By 1983, he co-founded Bresler-Kelly & Associates, a boutique agency, and managed the careers of other notable Hollywood personas like Judd Hirsch and Randy Quaid. Beyond his clients, Bresler also significantly impacted the Association of Talent Agents (ATA), where he served as president for over a decade, contributing to its growth in Hollywood.
Karen Stuart, ATA’s executive director, acknowledged Sandy’s deep commitment to talent agency work, stating it was instrumental in advancing the interests of their members and the industry at large. She further highlighted his role as a mentor and his enduring influence in the field.
In 2003, Bresler underwent a sextuple heart bypass surgery, but his health challenges did not deter him from his work. His unwavering dedication to his clients and the entertainment industry remained intact after the surgery, reflecting his resilience and professional dedication.
In recent years, Nicholson has largely remained out of the public spotlight. The 85-year-old actor, famous for his roles in “The Shining” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” has been somewhat reclusive, sparking speculation about potential memory issues. Though Nicholson has refuted claims of retirement due to health concerns, he has not been active in Hollywood since 2010.
Bresler is survived by Nancy, his wife of 58 years, their two children, Eric and Jennifer, and twin grandsons, Brandon and Jonah. His funeral took place on August 6 at the Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California.
