John T. Morgan Academy’s junior quarterback, Caden Tellier, passed away on August 24, 2024 following a severe brain injury sustained during a football game in Selma, Alabama. The 16-year-old was injured on August 23 during the third quarter of the season opener against Southern Academy, where his team emerged victorious with a 30-22 score.
After the incident, Tellier was rushed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital via air ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Bryan Oliver, headmaster of the school, confirmed in a statement that Tellier suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his brain on what seemed to be a regular play. Oliver expressed profound grief over the loss, mentioning Caden’s strong faith, and his contributions to the school community as a student, friend, athlete, and devout Christian.
Oliver extended his condolences to Caden’s family and emphasized the school’s dedication to supporting them during this difficult period. He recognized the overwhelming support from other schools and individuals and assured that Caden’s legacy would be remembered.
Tellier, a distinguished athlete, had notable performances in both football and baseball. He threw for 1,228 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions in eight games during his sophomore football season. During the baseball season, he batted .311, hit two home runs, drove in 10 runs, and scored 21 times over 17 games.
Arsella Slagel Tellier and Jamie Tellier, Caden’s parents, took to Facebook to share the news of their son’s passing. They expressed gratitude for the prayers and requested continued support. They also mentioned Caden’s kindness, generosity, and love that touched everyone who knew him.
The Telliers added that Caden continued his selfless acts even after death, as his life would now help others through organ donations. They shared their plans to spend the next few days with his physical body, comforted by the knowledge that his spirit was rejoicing in heaven.
The local and wider community has shown immense support for the Tellier family. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with medical, life-flight, and funeral costs, raising over $110,000.
Caden Tellier’s death underscores the potential risks involved in contact sports like football. His death came just nine days after the death of another Alabama high school football player, 14-year-old Semaj Wilkins, who collapsed during a practice session.
