A 25-year-old mother, Kaitlynn Lee, was fatally shot while filming a TikTok video with a friend in her New Albany, Indiana apartment on August 10, 2024. Her ex-boyfriend, Joshua Thompson, has been charged with her murder.
The shooting occurred at around 5 a.m. in Lee’s apartment on Village Drive. According to police, Lee was recording a TikTok video in the kitchen when Thompson, 25, appeared at the window. Witnesses reported hearing Thompson bang on the window before Lee approached to ask, “What are you doing here?” Thompson then fired two to three shots, striking Lee in the head. The horrific event was captured on the TikTok video, which shows Lee falling out of view as smoke filled the room.
Lee had an active no-contact order against Thompson, which was issued after an incident of domestic violence in April 2024. Despite this, Thompson located her and committed the shooting. According to a witness, the relationship between Lee and Thompson had been toxic, with Lee expressing fear for her life. Lee had previously confided to a friend that if she were ever found dead, it would be because of the accused.
Thompson, the father of Lee’s one-year-old son, admitted to the shooting during his arrest. After the shooting, he called his brother in distress and confessed to the crime. He then called 911 and surrendered to the police. Thompson has been charged with murder, invasion of privacy, criminal recklessness, and unlawful carrying of a handgun. He is currently being held without bond, with a trial date set for March 24.
Lee, who is survived by three children, has left her family deeply affected by her tragic loss. According to her cousin, Lee’s children meant everything to her, and she would have done anything for them. To assist with funeral expenses and support her children, the same cousin initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which has already raised over $8,000.
Domestic violence organizations have highlighted this case, emphasizing the importance of resources for those in abusive relationships. The Center for Women and Families offers 24/7 anonymous hotlines and emergency shelters for those in need.
