Steph Curry, NBA icon and Golden State Warriors point guard, made an unexpected appearance in a video message at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois on August 22, 2024. He endorsed Kamala Harris for the presidency and encouraged Americans to vote in the upcoming election. Curry recently led Team USA to secure a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

In his video message wearing his Olympic gold medal, Curry stated, “This is about preserving hope and belief in our country.” He also expressed his confidence in Harris’ qualifications for the presidency and the privilege he feels in supporting her. Curry further emphasized the need for everyone to actively participate and contribute to the electoral process.

Curry, renowned for his remarkable basketball skills and social issue advocacy, has a strong belief in Harris’ leadership abilities. Their connection traces back to their shared roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Harris, a native of Oakland, is a long-time Warriors supporter. Curry had the opportunity to meet Harris during the Warriors’ visit to the White House following their victory in the 2022 championship.

The convention also included statements from other sports figures discussing politics. For instance, Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors and Curry’s coach, also endorsed Harris for president on the first night of the convention. In his speech, Kerr explained his decision to accept the invitation to speak at the DNC, which was a departure from his usual arena.

Kerr underlined his belief in a leadership style that includes maintaining dignity, truthfulness, an ability to laugh at oneself, and a genuine concern and affection for those being led. He noted that he sees these traits in Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.

Kerr concluded his speech with a reference to the famous “Night, Night” celebration gesture of Warriors star Steph Curry. He suggested that once the election results are confirmed, they can tell Donald Trump, “Night, night!”
