Jessica Morales, 65, was fatally stabbed inside a Walmart Supercenter in Lake Elsinore, California on Monday morning, August 5, 2024. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of an assault at the store located on the 29000 block of Central Avenue shortly after 7 a.m.
Upon arrival, deputies found Morales, a resident of Menifee, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Lonnie Hinton of Wildomar. Hinton, who was on parole after being released from prison in March 2024 for a robbery conviction, turned himself in at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station following the incident. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail at the Cois Byrd Detention Center.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reported in a press release that the attack seemed to be random, with no prior interaction between the suspect and the victim. The assault has shocked both the community and store employees, as no motive has been identified for the violent act.
In a statement, a Walmart spokesperson conveyed sympathy and announced that the Lake Elsinore store will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing. The company expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences and support to the victim’s family. Walmart also stated that it would continue to assist its employees during this challenging period.
Hinton was arrested in 2020 after being accused of stabbing an employee at a restaurant in Perris, California. The employee survived and charges for assault with a deadly weapon were dropped as part of a plea deal; Hinton was charged with robbery. His recent release and parole status have raised questions about the circumstances that led to the violent incident at Walmart.
A coworker, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the victim as an exceptionally kind person and a wonderful friend, noting that she was well-loved by everyone, emphasizing the personal impact of the tragedy.
Lake Elsinore, located about 75 miles southeast of Los Angeles, is known for its scenic beauty and tranquil setting. The incident has disrupted the peace in this suburban community, leaving residents and local officials seeking answers and justice for Morales.
The Lake Elsinore Walmart remains closed. The company is supporting employees as they navigate the aftermath of this event. As the investigation progresses, the community remains focused on healing and ensuring justice is served.
