In a shocking incident that has left the town of Minden, Louisiana in disbelief, an 11-year-old boy has been taken into police custody for allegedly shooting and killing two individuals, one of whom was a former mayor. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

Minden Police Chief Jared McIver disclosed that the boy is believed to have fatally shot his grandfather, 82-year-old Joe Cornelius Sr. and his mother, 31, Keisha Miles. Both victims were discovered with numerous gunshot wounds inside a house on Austin Street at approximately 6:30 a.m., following a report of two dead bodies.

While the identity of the minor suspect has been withheld by investigators, it has been confirmed that he is related to the victims. The child reportedly confessed to the crime when he was brought to the scene of the crime by an adult for questioning, according to law enforcement officials.

Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing a dispute between Cornelius and the boy before the gunshots were fired. A neighbor recounted to the media, “About eight gunshots. Pow, pow, pow and then pow, pow, pow.” While the police have yet to confirm the nature of the dispute, some locals have suggested it could have been about credit card charges for video games.

Joe Cornelius Sr. was a well-known figure within Minden’s Black community. He served on the city council for many years and briefly held the position of interim mayor in 2013. He was also a former deputy sheriff and marshal, recognized for his contribution to youth programs and efforts to advance local Black history education.

Chief McIver indicated that the investigation is in its preliminary stages and added that the child has shown no remorse. Information regarding how the child obtained the firearm used in the shooting has not been released by the police.

Mayor of Minden, Nick Cox, lauded Cornelius Sr.’s long-term commitment to the community. He acknowledged Cornelius’ ceaseless work towards the enhancement of the city during his public service years. Cox also expressed a personal sense of gratitude for Cornelius’ friendship and acknowledged the many ways Cornelius supported him and other residents of Minden over the years.

The incident has given rise to community concerns regarding the accessibility of firearms and the issue of juvenile violence. A local resident voiced serious concern about how effortlessly a young child could procure a weapon, underlining the emotional toll the event has had on the community.

This case also highlights the intricate issues associated with juvenile offenders and their treatment within the criminal justice system. In states like Louisiana, there are special provisions for dealing with cases involving young offenders. The specific legal process for this case will likely be influenced by various factors, including the child’s age, the seriousness of the crime, and the discretion of prosecutors and judges.
