A probe into the murder of Claudiu-Carol Kondor, an Amazon delivery driver, began after he was tragically killed during an apparent van hijacking in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Kondor, 42, was in the midst of preventing a thief from absconding with his van when the assailant drove off, leaving Kondor partially inside the vehicle.
The driver’s fatal encounter transpired at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Heights Drive in Wortley, Leeds, shortly after Kondor had finished a delivery. As reported by West Yorkshire Police, upon noticing a man trying to rob his silver Ford Transit van, Kondor attempted to intervene. The thief then accelerated away, dragging Kondor along the road. The van hit two stationary vehicles before Kondor was ejected and left severely wounded. Despite immediate medical attention from bystanders and paramedics, Kondor was declared dead at the scene.
Describing the circumstances as deeply unsettling, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, leading the investigation, assured that every effort was being made to apprehend the individual(s) responsible and on Wednesday night, August 21, a 32-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder, and on Thursday, after appeals to the public, 24-year-old Eddie Hampshire was caught and arrested. A woman was also held on suspicion of aiding an offender.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in the Belle Isle neighborhood, roughly six miles from the scene of the crime. Investigators are still appealing for witnesses and are particularly interested in obtaining any dashcam or CCTV footage. Entwistle underscored the significance of anyone in the vicinity or possessing relevant footage to come forward, reiterating their commitment to holding the suspects accountable for this senseless fatality.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, friends and colleagues paid tribute to Kondor, a native of Romania. Kondor was remembered as a well-liked and diligent worker.
