A tragic incident occurred on September 7, 2024, when a 12-year-old boy fell from a balcony on the Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas cruise ship. The ship was nearing the conclusion of a weeklong Caribbean trip and was en route to Galveston, Texas at the time of the accident.
The boy had climbed the balcony and fell from a high deck, dropping six decks before landing in the Central Park area of Deck 8. This area, filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, is a busy public space on the ship. Despite immediate medical attention from the ship’s medical staff, the boy could not be saved and died before the ship arrived at port.
A representative from Royal Caribbean confirmed the death of a passenger and expressed the company’s sorrow over the event. They also announced that the company’s Care Team is providing support and assistance to the bereaved family.
The boy, whose identity is being kept private out of respect for his family, was said to be on the cruise with his family, including two sisters, for a birthday celebration. Witnesses report that he had been playing with friends he met on the cruise shortly before the incident.
The Harmony of the Seas, a part of Royal Caribbean’s OASIS-class fleet, is one of the world’s largest cruise ships. Launched in 2016, it has 16 guest decks, 2,747 staterooms, and a capacity of over 5,000 passengers. The ship was close to finishing a seven-day Caribbean trip when the accident occurred.
Royal Caribbean is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the circumstances that led to the fall. While detailed information is limited, the company has reiterated its dedication to passenger safety and expressed its deepest sympathies to the family affected by this loss.
This is not the first such incident on the Harmony of the Seas. In 2019, a 16-year-old boy also fell to his death while trying to climb into his room from a balcony after forgetting his room key.
The incident had immediate effects on the ship’s operations. The arrival of Harmony of the Seas in Galveston, Texas was delayed as authorities responded to the incident. Additionally, the embarking of passengers for the next journey was delayed, altering travel plans for many.
As news of the incident spread, fellow passengers expressed their shock and sympathy. Sara Tullas, a passenger on the ship, posted in a Harmony of the Seas Facebook group, “My daughter was friends with him and said he was upset today. If anyone knows the family, please send them thoughts and prayers. I wish I would have known he was struggling today.”
