On late Saturday night, September 21, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred outside Hush Lounge, a well-frequented nightclub in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident, resulting in four deaths and 17 injuries, took place in the city’s renowned Five Points South entertainment district, famous for its nightlife.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond reported that multiple people arrived at the scene in a vehicle, fired at a crowd, and then fled. The shooting left 21 wounded, including four fatalities. Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was a targeted attack on a specific individual, with potential financial motives involved. The suspects’ identities are still unknown.

The victims, Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, Carlos McCain, 27, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26 were transported to local hospitals. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital treated 11 of the injured, with several remaining in critical condition. The victims’ family members gathered at the hospital awaiting updates.

The incident was denounced by Mayor Randall Woodfin who highlighted the city’s ongoing gun violence issues. He stressed the need for stricter regulations to address the problem.

Witness Gabriel Eslami, 24, described the scene as chaotic. He was in line outside Hush Lounge around 11 p.m. when the gunfire started. A bullet struck his leg, causing him to collapse. He described the aftermath as a scene from a horror movie, with bodies scattered across the sidewalk and gun smoke lingering in the air.

Eslami, who was hit in his inner thigh, was taken to the hospital by a friend who was also grazed by a bullet. Doctors informed him that the bullet had missed critical arteries by mere millimeters. He expressed relief at his survival but acknowledged the unfortunate loss of others who didn’t make it home that night.

The Birmingham Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. They are encouraging witnesses or local businesses with security footage to come forward to support the ongoing investigation.

The involvement of the FBI indicates potential federal charges against the suspects, especially considering the use of an illegal automatic weapon. Investigations are ongoing to determine if a machine gun conversion device, which can illegally convert a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic weapon, was used.

This incident marks the second mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama this year. A similar incident at a nightclub in July also claimed four lives, drawing attention to the city’s escalating violence. The Birmingham Police Department is working with federal agencies to address this troubling trend.

The city of Birmingham remains tense in the wake of another deadly shooting. Community leaders are urging calm and cooperation in finding the culprits. Birmingham authorities have offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the assailants.
