Pop icon Taylor Swift’s public endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 U.S. presidential election has stirred controversy. Swift, known worldwide, encouraged her fans to cast their votes for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. However, her endorsement has sparked mixed reactions, as indicated by recent polls.
A YouGov poll suggests Swift’s endorsement may have deterred more voters than it attracted. Eight percent of those surveyed said they were “somewhat” or “much more likely” to vote for the Democrats following Swift’s endorsement, while a larger 20% stated they were now “somewhat” or “much less likely” to vote for Harris. However, the vast majority, 66% of respondents, reported that Swift’s endorsement did not influence their voting decisions.
In an Instagram post that received over 10 million likes, Swift announced her support for Harris, characterizing her as “steady-handed” and a “gifted leader.” She also expressed confidence in Harris’ capability to fight for the issues and rights important to her.
The Trump campaign swiftly responded to Swift’s endorsement. Karoline Leavitt, a campaign spokeswoman, criticized Swift’s support for Harris, stating, “This is further evidence that the Democrat Party, unfortunately, is the party of the wealthy elite.”
Swift’s endorsement of Harris came after the first presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump. Swift voiced her worries about misinformation, pointing out false reports claiming she endorsed Trump.
Despite the mixed reactions, Swift’s endorsement has driven a surge in voter registration. Within a day of her post, over 400,000 people sought voter registration information via the link she shared, indicating her significant influence, particularly among young voters—a demographic both campaigns are actively targeting.
Swift’s influence extends beyond politics. Her close relationship with Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has attracted attention. Despite Mahomes liking some of Trump’s Instagram posts, their differing political views have not affected their friendship.
Although her endorsement might not have attracted as many voters as anticipated, Harris has expressed appreciation for Swift’s support. In a radio interview, she said, “I am very honored to have their support,” referring to celebrities, including Swift, who have endorsed her campaign.
