After a severe fall at Fredensborg Castle, Queen Margrethe II, aged 84, of Denmark has been released from Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, as per the royal household’s report. The incident resulted in serious injuries, including neck vertebrae damage and a fracture in her left hand.

The Queen had been in the hospital for observation since the fall on September 18, 2024. She is now recuperating at her home in Fredensborg. However, she is expected to have an extended recovery period. It was revealed by the palace that her left hand is in a cast and she will need to wear a rigid neck collar for several months due to her injuries.

As a result of her injuries, Queen Margrethe has had to cancel numerous public engagements and will likely remain out of the public eye for the foreseeable future. Despite this, the royal household issued a statement assuring the public that the Queen is in high spirits and recuperating well, though the process will take time.

Her son, King Frederik X of Denmark, provided an update on his mother’s condition, expressing relief at her recovery but acknowledging that a period of rest and rehabilitation will be necessary. Frederik, 55, thanked the public for their support and well wishes, as well as the hospital staff for their dedication during his mother’s treatment.

The fall occurred only a few months after Queen Margrethe’s decision to abdicate the throne due to health concerns. This was the first voluntary abdication by a Danish monarch in almost 900 years. The Queen, who had been on the throne for 52 years, cited health issues that made it challenging for her to fulfill her duties. Her recent back surgery and various other health issues over the past few years were factors in her decision.

Throughout her 52-year reign, Queen Margrethe was known for her resilience and dedication. However, declining health in recent years, including the mentioned back surgery, led to multiple medical interventions and ultimately influenced her decision to pass the throne to her son, King Frederik X.

The Queen’s fall and the ensuing hospital stay have sparked concern among the Danish people, where she remains a cherished figure. Despite her surprising abdication, her ongoing role as the King’s mother has brought comfort to the nation. Her health has been a significant topic of public interest, particularly after her back surgery earlier this year.

The royal household has yet to provide details on when or if the Queen will return to any official duties. Given her current health condition, it’s likely she will focus on her recovery in the coming months. Queen Margrethe is expected to continue recuperating at Fredensborg Castle, located north of Copenhagen.
