A fatal shooting incident at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland took the life of Warren Curtis Grant, a 15-year-old student, on September 6, 2024. The tragedy occurred during a disagreement in a boys’ bathroom located on the first floor of the school.

As Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler reported, the incident transpired during school hours when a feud between Grant and Jaylen Prince, a 16-year-old fellow student, escalated. “This was the first day of the suspect’s attendance at school despite being the fourth day of the school year,” Gahler shared.

The altercation swiftly turned deadly when a single gunshot was fired. Prince immediately fled the premises. Quick-thinking individuals removed Grant from the bathroom, and school nurses administered immediate aid, caring for the wounded student until emergency services arrived.

Despite heroic efforts from medical professionals at a local hospital, Grant succumbed to his injuries.

Law enforcement apprehended Prince shortly after the incident, but his age presented a challenge for the authorities, limiting their ability to directly question the young suspect. Sheriff Gahler explained that they were barred from speaking with the 16-year-old.

Prince is currently in custody without bail, facing charges of first- and second-degree murder, and first and second-degree assault, among others. A search of his bedroom uncovered ammunition stashed under his mattress, and images of him brandishing a firearm were found on his phone.

The shooting incident led to an immediate lockdown of Joppatowne High School. Parents were promptly informed about the situation and briefed about the procedures for reuniting with their children.

In response to the tragedy, Maryland Governor Wes Moore issued a public statement, extending his condolences to the community of Joppatowne and expressing his concern about school safety. The Governor noted that the entire state of Maryland was thinking of the young victim, Warren Curtis Grant, his family, friends, educators, mentors, and all who knew him.

The governor praised the prompt action of local authorities, Maryland State Police, first responders, and school personnel. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to aid families, grassroots leaders, and local law enforcement in their endeavors to improve school and community safety.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions surrounding school safety measures and the prevention of gun violence in educational environments. Calls for enhanced safety protocols and stricter firearm legislation have been voiced by the community to avoid similar future incidents.

Joppatowne High School suspended operations for three days, from September 9 to September 11, 2024. During this closure, the school district committed to providing support services for students, including access to professional counselors and the continuation of meal programs.
