A deadly shooting incident occurred at a Ramada by Wyndham hotel in Fairfield, New Jersey on October 4, resulting in one death and another person critically injured. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the incident took place around 12:30 p.m. at the hotel, which is located on Two Bridges Road. Following reports of the shooting, police arrived at the scene and found two men with gunshot wounds.
The deceased was later identified as Mohammad Sahariar, a 28-year-old Ramada hotel employee from Fairfield. He was declared dead at the scene. Another hotel employee, who sustained critical injuries and whose name has been withheld, was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
The afternoon shooting led to a significant police presence in and around the hotel, including the nearby Jose Tejas restaurant. The Fairfield police department initially alerted the public about the heightened law enforcement activity but assured residents that there was no active shooter or continuing threat to the community.
Details regarding the incident have been scant, with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office remaining silent about potential motives or any connection between the victims and the alleged shooter.
On October 9, authorities arrested Tyrone Malcolm, 39, of Middletown, NY, in connection with the shooting. He was charged with murder and is currently awaiting extradition from New York. Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Fairfield Police Chief Anthony Manna announced the arrest.
In a social media post, Tanjil Islam, Sahariar’s brother, expressed his sorrow over the loss of his sibling. He also indicated that the family did not know the details surrounding the incident, writing on Facebook, “We don’t know who shot or how it went down.”
Guests at the Ramada Hotel were taken aback by the violent incident. Melissa Lupinacci, who was staying at the hotel at the time, described hearing a disturbance around the same time the shooting occurred. She chose to remain in her room and later discovered that the area had been cordoned off with crime scene tape.
Marie Barnhurst, another guest traveling with her family, arrived at the hotel to find their plans disrupted due to the incident. However, despite the shocking circumstances, neither guest expressed immediate fear for their safety, viewing it as an isolated event. Barnhurst added that due to the hotel’s non-refundable reservation policy, she would likely stay as planned.
