Kaseem Ryan, known to fans as the underground rap icon Ka, has died at age 52, according to a statement released by his family on Saturday. Known for his lyrical genius and service to his community, Ka passed away unexpectedly in New York City on October 12, 2024. His passing has profoundly impacted the Brooklyn community and the hip-hop world.
A true son of Brooklyn, New York, Ka grew up in Brownsville and became an influential voice in the underground rap scene. His journey in music began in the 1990s as part of the rap group Natural Elements, and he released his debut solo album “Iron Works” in 2008. Reflecting on his rise, Ka once said, “I have a full-time job, and I work all the time. I try to keep that kinda low.”
In addition to his music, Ka dedicated two decades to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), where he served as a captain. He was a first responder during the September 11 attacks and later continued to balance his responsibilities as a firefighter and an artist. “I never wanted to be ‘The Rapping Captain,’” Ka told the media in 2013. “I try to be a good firefighter. And when I come home, I try to make some dope music.”
Ka’s final album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” released in September, continued to showcase his unique style, which blends raw storytelling with complex themes. His music is often described as a blend of gritty realism and profound introspection.
Ka is survived by his mother, sister, and wife, Mimi Valdé, a respected journalist and producer with a long career. She previously served as editor-in-chief at VIBE and more recently worked as a producer on Pharrell Williams’ new autobiography film, “Piece By Piece.”
She shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing her enduring love for her husband and calling him her king, hero, and best friend. She affirmed that their love is everlasting and bid him a peaceful rest, promising to see him again.
