After a resounding triumph over the University of Arizona Wildcats, Deion Sanders, the head coach of the University of Colorado Boulder football team, the Buffaloes, responded jestingly to a pre-game prediction made by former President Barack Obama. The incident offered a glimpse into the overlapping worlds of sports and politics, as Sanders called out Obama for “playing the political game.”

The day before the game, former President Obama was in Tucson, Arizona campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris. During his speech, he referred to the impending match between Colorado and Arizona. He told the audience, “As we landed, we saw Colorado’s buses at the airport. And I know Colorado’s got a couple good players. But I also know you guys have beaten them twice in a row, so don’t bet against the Wildcats tomorrow.”

Sanders, also known as “Coach Prime,” took issue with Obama’s suggestion that his team only has “a couple good players.” Following Colorado’s impressive 34-7 win over Arizona, Sanders responded to Obama’s remarks during his post-game press conference.

Sanders expressed his admiration and respect for President Obama, but also acknowledged his awareness of the former President’s comments about the game. Sanders stated that this was the reason he generally avoids politics, as he believes politicians often must play the political game. He contended that his Colorado team is comprised of more than just a couple of good players.

The Buffaloes demonstrated Sanders’ point on the field, overpowering the Wildcats. By halftime, Colorado had established a substantial 28-7 lead, showcasing the team’s depth beyond just a few key players. The team’s performance was so solid that they were able to bench star player Travis Hunter for the entire second half.

Sanders conceded that Obama was likely briefed on Arizona’s recent victories over Colorado, referencing the former President’s comment about Arizona’s back-to-back wins against the Buffaloes. “But president, c’mon man,” Sanders joked. “You my man. I love you, I appreciate you, but c’mon dawg. God bless you. I still love you.”

With this win, Colorado’s record for the season improved to 5-2, exceeding their total victories from the previous year and bringing them one step closer to qualifying for a bowl game. Sanders’ successful stewardship of the team has been a notable storyline in this college football season, drawing interest from sports enthusiasts and political figures alike.
