An armed assault on Los Cantaritos bar in Queretaro, Mexico’s historic district, took place on the night of November 9, 2024, leading to the death of 10 individuals and injuries to 13 others. The perpetrators, at least four in number, arrived at the venue in a pickup truck and began firing at the bar-goers. The deceased include seven men and three women.
The city’s head of public security, Juan Luis Ferrusca Ortiz, confirmed the incident and the casualties’ count. He also mentioned that law enforcement had apprehended at least one person in relation to the attack.
Authorities managed to identify those involved using the license plates on the vehicle the attackers used to escape. The vehicle was later discovered deserted and burnt.
Social media shares of security camera footage from the bar portray a group of four individuals entering and firing randomly at seated patrons. The video depicts people shouting, falling to the floor, and seeking cover, with blood visible from those hit by the gunfire.
Located roughly 120 miles northwest of Mexico City, Queretaro is typically deemed one of Mexico’s safer regions. The state has been mostly untouched by the violence levels seen in neighboring areas. Nevertheless, this incident has sparked worry about the potential infiltration of organized crime-related violence into areas previously unaffected.
Condemning the attack, Governor Mauricio Kuri reassured residents that justice would be served. “I reiterate to the people of Queretaro that there will be punishment for those responsible for this brutal act,” Kuri stated. He also announced that security provisions would be strengthened to avert future incidents.
The injured were moved to local hospitals for medical attention. Two of them are reported to be in a critical state. The authorities have not yet disclosed the victims’ identities, as they are waiting to inform their families first.
This attack is part of a larger trend of violence affecting various parts of Mexico. While Queretaro has largely been shielded from such incidents, other regions have witnessed significant violence associated with organized crime and drug cartels. The federal government has been taking steps to fight these criminal groups, but the issue persists.
Local residents have voiced shock and concern following the incident, emphasizing the need for heightened security and vigilance. Community leaders are encouraging citizens to cooperate with the authorities and report any suspicious activities to help deter future attacks.
The Los Cantaritos bar, a well-liked local spot, has been temporarily shut down in the wake of the attack. The owners and staff are cooperating with the authorities as they evaluate the damage and plan for future operations. Support services are being provided to the employees and customers affected by the incident.
